Bowie Tops The All Time Favorite List

The music critic Neil McCormick from the U.K.'s Telegraph newspaper has taken the time to compile a list of the 100 Greatest Songs of All-Time. David Bowie's "Life on Mars" tops the list. McCormick says, "For me, a great song is about melody and lyric dovetailing together to become more than the sum of their parts, evoking ideas and emotions... A truly great song takes on a kind of intrinsic life of its own. Its genius manifests when sung a cappella, by anyone, from a towering vocalist to an amateur alone in the shower." Bowie actually bookends the list -- "Space Oddity" is number-100. "I really do albums for different reasons. I don't have one way of approaching an album. As each year rolls around and the seasons change and one changes and the environment certainly changes, one's reasons for making music change quite drastically. That's always affected me very much."
