Classic Rock Report: Peter Gabriel Still Isn't Into Punk

Peter Gabriel, the former front man of Genesis turned solo artist...is best known for outrageously different. Almost weird. But don't get caught calling him a particle of the Punk Rock era of music. Cut and dry. Gabriel says the movement was a lie. Joe Strummer from the Clash and the Sex Pistols came from the same vein of history. But Genesis nor Gabriel were open to changing their image to fit into the hot sound of the month club. Which led Critics and fans to instantly label them the opposition. Three decades later Gabriel has chosen to clean the slate. Claiming He and Genesis weren't privileged elite snotty nosed rich kids but just as blue collar as anybody else. Punk has a story. The accusation has been based on being raw. Taken from the hearts and souls of the working-class. Punk was bloated with overly self-serious rock stars. It's Peter Gabriel that's outing the reality by saying, "It wasn’t always so cut and dry." He isn't shy to explain how his years with Genesis were about the band and its members with a middle-class upbringing. They weren't part of a privileged elite. “To this day, we’ve never outgrown the snotty rich-kid thing,” Punk's always been about blue-collar folks and Peter claims to have come from the same background. “It used to piss me off seeing all these ‘people’s hero’ musicians – like Joe Strummer – who’d come from a similar background to mine but were keeping it quiet,” Gabriel pointed out. “In Genesis, we were always very straight about where we came from, and we were middle-class, not aristocratic.” Gabriel says, “I saw the Sex Pistols, quite by chance, at the 100 Club,” he said. “There were only about 40 people in the audience, not the hundreds that have claimed to be there. There was a vibe, for sure, but I preferred the Clash musically. But we were the declared opposition, what punk was there to destroy.” As for what the oddly shaped weirdly written out songwriter and performer is doing these days? “I’d love to have a songwriters’ event where you had the Sherman Brothers playing their songs for ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘The Jungle Book’ next to Trent Reznor and Dr. Dre – and everyone talking about how they put songs together. That’s what fascinates me – how you arrive at a song and the processes you go through. Everything else is bulls—.”

Classic Rock Report: Can Former Foreigner's Sing Our National Anthem?

Can former Foreigner's sing our National Anthem? This one did. Lou Gramm, formally of Foreigner lit up Triple A baseball with the perfect pitch volume and tone. After hitting the high notes,,, Gramm grabbed a dog and sold autograph copies of his book ‘Juke Box Hero: My Five Decades in Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ The book is a layout of his ups and downs, as a solo artist and as the front man of Foreigner. The day when everything on the radio was nothing but Foreigner. A seriously out of control string of albums success stories that took the band through the ’70s and ’80s. His book also tells the true tales of experiencing personal struggles and a brain tumor that almost took him to the horizon. As of late. The Dude's pretty busy. Earlier he teamed back up with Foreigner, including his former songwriting partner Mick Jones. Now he's hit the road for a North American tour that'll keep him away from home til October. Classic Rock Report: Songwriting Week 2013

Sadly... school teacher's rarely if ever put focus on the importance of writing the lyrics of songs. Students are introduced to poetry. From Shakespeare to Walden, a touch of Silverstein and the ever popular Dr. Sueus. How about Jagger and Richards? Joplin? Hendrix? Elton John and Bernie Taupin? I couldn't stop laughing when I learned this week. In the center of summer! When 93% of all young adults and elementary age kids are out of school.... It's here! Songwriting Week 2013! Musicians, producers and publishers taking the time to honor those who've been given the gift of writing lyrics. Until this week...the most important part of the puzzle was missing. The fans. You know...those that purchase the music that's been written. Music Radar magazine has unveiled the top five artists fans have labeled the “most crucial – most lucrative – disciples of the writing instrument. 1. John Lennon & Paul McCartney 2. Bob Dylan 3. Queen 4. Neil Young 5. Kurt Cobain 6. Bruce Springsteen 7. Roger Waters & David Gilmour 8. Noel Gallagher 9. Radiohead 10. David Bowie 11. Paul Simon 12. Jimmy Page & Robert Plant 13. Brian Wilson 14. Morrissey & Johnny Marr 15. Joni Mitchell Fellow Beatle George Harrison is placed at number 27 in the poll, which features 46 artists in total including James Hetfield at 17, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards at 21, Pete Townsend at 34, Chuck Berry at 43, Don Henley and Glenn Frey at 47, and Jeff Lynne at 49. Wait! I'm not ending here! Songwriter's week. Even if you scratch a lyric or a passing thought somewhere at the top of your favorite place to doodle. You are part of the crowd that has kept a long of rhythm in the flow of everyday breathing. I love to venture onto the open door streets of all cities in America and listen to the writing. From homeless men and women singing the blues to mid-teen wanna-be's that have been influenced to be just like Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar during their heyday of penning out lyrics. Writing isn't texting. Writing and taking what you feel and allowing the echo to find its way through every muscle and limb only to pop out of the tip of a pen.

Classic Rock Report: Hot For First Amendment Rights

Anything happens during least expected moments. Like spouting out Van Halen song lyrics on a college campus. This day forward. Probably not the best thing to do. It's not looked up ona s being free speech. A federal court judge has dismissed Joseph Corlett’s suit, ruling actions of this nature aren't protected by the First Amendment. The Judge says, “Such expressions, while possibly appropriate in some settings, need not be tolerated by university officials.” Corlett. Now 57. Was put on the sidelines and into longerterm timeout from walking onto the campus in 2012. The reason? A 33-page essay called ‘Hot for Teacher." He penned it out. Making it about his professor. Corlett claims students were being given no restrictions on the topic they were supposed to write about. They were encouraged to write openly and from the heart. The upper wings of the university sorta didn't get into it. They say the essays content was not so acceptable. Very inappropriate. Within the paragraphs Corlett found the need to call his professor “My Ginger,” the very reference so often attached to unforgettable character played by Tina Louise on ‘Gilligan’s Island.’ The upper departments went on to explain that Corlett “graphically compared her to a sitcom character he fantasized over. “This is a case that never should have been brought, and justice has been served by its quick and decisive dismissal,” said Len Niehoff, the university’s attorney. Corlett’s lawyer said that she was disappointed by the ruling and was “exploring the next step.”

Classic Rock Report: Great White Versus Great White

There should be a Classic Rock rule book. First there's fame. Then court cases over the rights to the band's name. Styx, Guns N Roses, The Guess Who. Kiss isn't Kiss without Frehley and Criss. "Great White" role in the mix has just been fixed. Their recent reunion ended when the band's original singer Jack Russell announced, "I own the name!" Sound confusing? Get this... In court yesterday...the judge signed into rule Great White should stay Great White only if they approve of Jack Russell fronting the band Jack Russell's Great White. A total radio foul play! How is the radio jock asked to cut the commercial supposed to explain the difference between the two bands? In 15 seconds. Here's the backstage pass to the layout of the stage. Yesterday's agreement ends a saga that started in March of last year. Jack decided to sue the other guys for moving forward as Great White. This decision came after Jack announced he had “taken a medical leave of absence.” Nobody gave in. So...it went to court and now the settlement allows both sides to stay Great White. In the studio and on the long and winding road. Guess who got eff=ed in the deal. Fans! The people that purchased the music. That happened to support their lifestyle. And probably paid the judge cuz rule maker's don't do it free! Fan's have been demanding a full reunion and ended getting a choice.

Classic Rock Report: Slash Performs Live On Your Computer Tomorrow Night

I spend a lot of time standing in front of the future and nearly next to every time I bump into students that say, "What do you mean the web is the next step of being a Broadcaster?" I'm having flashbacks of those 1990's television commercial where comedians and actors teamed up to tell computer users to use the internet for more than it's fad image. It's not going away. It's getting bigger with easier access for every part of the world. My Space is fighting hard to revamp their style. Millions still use Twitter. Face Book is a political nightmare with so much snooping taking place that Big Brother has decided to sit back and wait for us to tear everything apart. I love the idea that Pay Per View is now offering movies to be purchased the very moment they open in theaters. I wouldn't know what to do without I Heart Radio! Rock God guitarist Slash...will perform the final night of his U.S. tour on your home office or laptop computer. From Vegas. Tomorrow night. July 25, 2013 9 PM Pacific. On stage with Slash. Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. The concert will be streamed online. The show — is no different than a true rock concert. This show will support his most work, ‘Apocalyptic Love’ — You'll be at home and Slash will jam at the House of Blues in Vegas. EVNTLIVE makes this happen. Streaming multi-camera, high-definition concerts have been performed by Bon Jovi and the Mountain Jam Festival. What's really cool is that EVNTLIVE lets fans mingle inside several levels of social-networking platforms during the show. In the days after the internet concert Slash is expected to get back to the Angry Birds soundtrack.

Classic Rock Report: Elton John Lands An Iconic First

The longer you pace through every day job requirements and off the wall family demands... The easier it becomes to forget the stuff that once rocked your world more than the discovery of a Playboy sitting on a neighbor's sofa. Music rips through the system faster than a shot of beer on a 102 degree Montana day. Been there done it. Still numb from the affects. Before Elton John got classified Adult Rock. He was pumping out a brand of British bass beats and guitar riffs unique to the shores of America. I distinctly remember the first time I ran into Crocodile Rock. Taking care of my incredibly beautiful single mother of two boys kids. I was twelve. She needed me. Funny how little guys think they're all man at any age. I liked Elton John because Collette couldn't get enough of him. Then there was that other time. After learning I had just been kicked out of the American Jr Bowling Congress for deciding to bowl in the adult league where you win money. Went to a friend's house and the first thing he cranks up is Elton John. I knew right then and there. I had to buy into what this British Rocker was sending out. The BRIT Awards have added a new honor. Rock’s most iconic singer’s. The first recipient? Elton John. BPI and Brit Awards chief executive Geoff Taylor says, "Elton is a “true icon of our cultural life” Elton John...live at the I Heart Music Festival September 21st and 22nd in Las Vegas. Win tickets on wrfx.com The award will be given to Elton on September 2 in London. Fourteen days later his new collection of tunes The Diving Board will hit I Heart Radio. The event, which will later be broadcasted on ITV, benefitting the BRIT Trust and the Royal Academy of Music where Elton John was given his musical instruction. This isn't Elton's first Brit trophy. He's won Outstanding Contribution in 1986 and 1995, Best BRIT Male Artist in 1991, and the Freddie Mercury Award in 1998.

Classic Rock Report: Spinal Tap On Tour?

The Archies weren't a real band. The Partridge Family sorta kinda was. The Monkee's weren't supposed to be. And Three Dog Night was a masterfully produced collection of songwriters and lead vocalists that dominated Pop Rock but never tore up the Classic side of listening. Toss in Hollywood's attempt at making Rock movies and the spotlight will shine all night. Is there anybody bigger and more fake than Spinal Tap? Thirty years after embracing the ticket taker race at theaters... Hollywood's most famous not-so-real set of musicians are set to tie their shoes and hit the real road. Michael McKean has always joked about being a fake band that's played Wembley, Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall and other weird places. But according to the Lavern and Shirley star turned big screen actor, the toughest part about going out on the road...has nothing to do with living up to where their imaginary places, stages and groupies. It's staying in character. Faking a great British accent without falling off the beer the wagon is a serious art form. Asked about reuniting. The bands response is always,“ We get asked to do shows on a regular basis. But what I will say is that we’re in the midst of talking about something for next year.” Keeping on the edge of a shadow is Christopher Guest who's launching a new sitcom called Family Tree. Look who's in it Michael McKean! Who once again is sporting Englishman's accent. Hmmmm is it practice for the tour or do American's love middle aged men with fake British accents? Tour dates will be posted the moment Hollywood sets them free

Classic Rock Report: Borat Stalls The Making Of The Freddie Mercury Movie

What is it with Rock Star movies? Everybody wants to be in one! Most of the flicks barely cover the correct pronunciation of the artists life and style. And yet we'll fork out the boss man's payroll to see vibrations ignite at night on that big screen. There's more drama in the making of a Rock Movie than a daytime Soap. Classic Rock fans of Freddie Mercury. Will have to wait. The long-awaited flick about the front man of Queen. Seriously lacks the brilliant harmony of Bohemian Rhapsody. The actor that tickled your funny bone in Borat. Has walked away from the script. Sacha Baron Cohen...hired to play Freddie Mercury felt the film needed to be a gritty tell all. The members of Queen said, "Noooo... we're shooting for a PG rating." Borat can't be bought. He's left the lot. But you can catch Queen at the I Heart Music Festival in Vegas on September 21st and 22nd. Hook up with wrfx.com

Classic Rock Report: The Dirty Nasty Side Of Aerosmith

Steven Tyler isn't the only bad boy in Aerosmith. Tom Hamilton’s rude sense of humor just un-tuned his famous bass. His son took one of the 8,000 obscene Beanie Babies he had made to school. The Obscenies....as he calls them....have become a great classic rock joke and fallen apart at the seams. Tom's always been hooked up with his dirty little sandbags, "They’re like the equivalent to Beanie Babies except they’re dirty." How nasty are the beanbags? Tom explains, “I have a character named Scrotilla The Hun who is a rampaging d***, and a character named Robin Redbreasts who has breast implants. How does something like this happen? Tom's answer, "I found somebody who had the connections to have plush toys made. There was some factory in China that was able to produce about 8000 of these things." Then it happened! Kids being kids! I was a snoopy ass. Why not his? Tom checks in with, “My son got into the box of them and took some to school and got in trouble… and then I got in trouble!” Tom has always loved a great punch line. It doesn't have to be commercial success. He says, "They’re pretty hilarious but I’ve never been able to find anybody who could figure out how to sell them."

Classic Rock Report: Fleetwood Mac Is Flipped

One of Classic Rock's greatest albums: Rumors from Fleetwood Mac has been flipped. London’s Royal Philharmonic has squeezed 50 plus musicians into the infamous Abbey Road Studios to recut, rearrange and rerelease the collection of songs that made Stevie Nicks and company legendary. Guess who's been pulled in to play guitar and offer up some vocals. Peter Frampton. He'll be coming alive on Philharmonic’s version of ‘Gold Dust Woman.’ ‘Rumours’ has always been known as that special chunk of mid-1970's music that's proved to be extremely important in the ranks of furthering the tales of Classic Rock album. Making it a major dent in history is the combination of unforgettable songwriting followed by the layout of production. The Philharmonics Arranger James Graydon told the world. “Although we were mindful of the fact that these songs are very well known, we decided to approach the arrangements from a slightly different perspective to make it work in the orchestral world.” The tunes all done up in really pretty attire has been released by Cleopatra Records and titled ‘The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours,’ Now ready for ear catching on Amazon, iTunes and other major retailers.

There's a couple political, politically oriented songs in it. There's some rock 'n' roll. There's some love songs, and it's starting to sound like Chicago again. And nobody is actually telling us what to write. It's just material that's coming out. We're putting it forward and sending it around for guys to play on...We don't actually have to go into a recording studio to make it happen. We have purchased enough gear that we can record either at home here in Sedona or in California or in, anywhere on the road, and we have the gear to do it with and world-class quality material is being recorded."

Nearly every movie in theaters is 3-D. Would you pay to see Zeppelin's Classic Rock drummer John Bonham bang on the skins next to his song Jason? The Bonham hologram duet is set to hit the road. Classic Rock Report: I Heart Music Featival Part Two Bon Jovi Is A Survivor

We're four days shy from doing it live. The who's who of the 2013 I Heart Music Festival in Las Vegas. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were there last year. It was the collaboration of several genres of sound that influenced the New Jersey based Rockers to kick the drums and strum the strings. The I Heart Music Festival was designed for that. To bring out the Artist and put them in a modern state of how Radio listeners make music a part of their day. Jon Bon Jovi had no problem pulling out his smart phone to show his connection. When asked who he'd like to see on the Bon Jovi channel. He walked a timid path only to reveal his list included U2, Cold Play and many others. Although things have been a little Hollywood-esque over the past few months. There's something Jon said at last years I Heart Music Festival that sheds a little hope for Classic Rock Fans, "We're survivors. That's why we've lasted so long." The announcement of the lineup of stars for the 2013 I Heart Music Festival is this Monday July 15th

Classic Rock Report: New KISS Cover Band Old Classic Rock Heroes

Cover Bands are just as much Americana as the actual band. This KISS cover band could actually be better. Hitting the road on the same tour bus is Guns n’Roses guitarist Bumblefoot, former Whitesnake drummer Brian Tichy and ex-Pantera bassist Rex Brown. The Kiss tribute act called ALIVE. The idea to cover KISS came after a charity concert. The arrangements were mind blowing..., GNR's Bumblefoot sounds just like Paul Stanley and Pantera's Rex Brown...the mirrored image of Simmons. ALIVE hits the road July 24th at The Whiskey in Hollywood. Then Vegas on the 25th.

Classic Rock Report: The Eagles Are On The Road

July 4th is over. You're back to work...and The Eagles are back on stage. Carrying more drama than Yoko forcing John out of the Beatles After months of speculation, Classic Rock fans wanna know who's in? Eagles drummer Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Walsh and Timothy B Bernie Leadon performs in part of the show. While founding bassist Randy Meisner was forced out... He nearly suffocated a few months back and is recovering. And Don Felder's legal action against the band has beer burped up the phrase, "When hell freezes over." The Eagles soar into Charlotte and Greensboro November 15th and 16th
If you still have your 45 collection. Don't set it free! Collectors are starting to pay a higher price from that sliver of vinyl. A Japanese seven-inch promo of Pink Floyd‘s single with Roger Waters pulled in $3 Grand on eBay. ‘Not Now John,’ is fronted by David Gilmour. Although I was never a fan of "B" sides. This one comes with ‘Your Possible Pasts,’ featured on 1983′s ‘The Final Cut.’ The tune topped out at number seven 7 here in the states and at number three the U.K. What made this 45 extra special was the white CBS label. History shows the Floyd was about to shatter. Some have said it was pretty much a Waters solo record. This is when the bands first keyboardist Richard Wright was kicked off the stage of stars during the creation of the album. Said to be one of their toughest to paste together.

Classic Rock Report: Styx Is Now a Moon

Pluto. Which is not a planet. Has two moons of its own. What's that got to do with Classic Rock n Roll? Scientists have named one of the moons Styx. On Face Book yesterday...Front man Tommy Shaw wrote, "Styx is proud to accept this new heavenly chart position. I predict a new Styx T-Shirt in the making!” Behind the inter Galactic scenes...the name choice has ticked off ‘Star Trek‘ fans, who pushed for the moon to be named ‘Vulcan’

KISS Poster Sells For 3 Grand

I grew up wearing KISS. I lived it. I breathed it. Their faces were the paper on my bedroom wall. I owned everything. One problem. I put staples through the soul of Rock n Roll. What kind of freak didn't hang their KISS banner's high above realities bite? Probably the Dude that once owned an appearance poster from St. Petersburg’s Bayfront Center on Oct. 20, 1975. The sliver of paper fetched $3,125. On tour behind its career-saving ‘Alive’ album, the band opened the show with ‘Deuce’ and concluded with an encore that featured ‘Cold Gin’ and ‘Rock and Roll All Nite.’ According to the poster, tickets were $5.50 in advance and $6.50 at the door. WAIT! Stand by! I have breaking news for poster keepers! Not so perfect still earns top dollar The winning eBay bidder also received original photos taken at this Florida concert and the ticket stub. Though the poster was never folded or rolled, it does contain various pinholes. As the seller says, “It hung on the closet doors of a young Kiss fan for many years. Back then, no thought was given to ‘mint condition’ or other such silliness.”

Since dropping his autobiography on Classic Rock fans three years ago...Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler refuses to back up and get out of music's unending game. Fresh off a successful tour...Tyler's now fronting a solo project. Love his reasons. Steven loves writing songs with people. People like Johnny Depp and Elton John. The songs keep pouring from his writing hand but making them a hot commodity on Itunes has been silent. Until Now. Does this mean Aerosmith is over? The press loves to hear stories about the front man of a band spinning out solo creations. That doesn't mean the original root has disappeared. Aerosmith isn't over. Catch the interview

Classic Rock Report: Starship Is Back And Avatar Sued For $150M

With so much Hype about Disney creating a new Star Wars. Another Starship has been cleared for takeoff. Mickey Thomas and company have just wrapped up their first studio effort since 1989. The super power behind the decision to hook back up wasn't the brainchild of Grace Slick or Marty Balin. It was the bass guitarist for Foreigner Jeff Pilson. His solo project ended up being the feeding ground for the rebirth of starship. Look for it on I Heart Radio September 17th
Steeling music off the web is an everyday thing. Robbing the artist that designed your album cover is a different story. Roger Dean, best known for his work with the groups Yes and Asia...is suing movie director James Cameron whose background scenes featured in the 2009 blockbuster ‘Avatar,’ were 100% his creations. Dean says he'll go away after the movie forks out $150 million.
